Scott and Cynthia at Wimbledon

Summer, 2014, found my wife Cynthia and me back in Europe for another amazing trip centered around tennis. We started with a week in London where we always play at the Hyde Park Tennis Center and capped it with a day at Wimbledon on the second day of the tournament where we were joined by our close friend and former ATP player Karsten Popp. We had the great fortune of getting to watch Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg warm up for an hour on court 4, followed by the Nadal/Klizan match on Center Court. Then, as always, we cruised the grounds watching all the great tennis with some Orangi practice court viewing thrown in. We’ve been to Wimbledon six times now but this was the first time we’d tried the famous strawberries and crème and it was absolutely delicious!

From London it was on to Senlisse, France, about 20 minutes outside of Paris. Karsten has lived in Senlisse for 16 years. A stone’s throw from Senlisse is the little town of Dampierre, home of the Dampierre Tennis Club. This club has one of the most unique tennis courts we’ve ever played on…a court inside a barn. It’s just amazing! It has nice, high ceilings, good lighting and you can slide the big side doors open to let fresh air in and view a beautiful green field right outside.

From Senlisse we drove to Gmunden, Austria, a storybook city in the Austrian Tyrol about an hour and half drive from Salzburg. Karsten has a perfectly located flat there overlooking the Traunsee Lake and some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ll ever see. We played tennis every day at the Gmunden Tennis Club, part of a huge sports complex that includes an ice hockey rink and basketball stadium. The tennis club features five of the most perfect red clay courts I’ve ever played on. In fact, over eight days of playing on them I didn’t get a single bad bounce! If it rains you can quickly switch to the indoor facility with its four courts, high ceilings and great lighting. The club features its own restaurant, bar, gym, theater, pro shop and hotel, all in a beautiful alpine setting.
